Family Care Cambodia is a volunteer organization, established in 2002. One of our projects is an assistance program for the CCPCR shelter for girls rescued from sexual abuse and domestic violence. It is home to 20 girls between the ages of 11 and 19. The girls have each been through personal trauma, such as children should never have to endure. Yet having a safe place to live with loving teachers and caregivers has made a huge difference in their lives. It is our goal that by creating a safe and comfortable dorming area, the girls will once again be able to sleep well throughout the night. We've seen when students have battered sleeping quarters, their participation in the classroom lessens due to lethargy, and their academic growth stagnates. We want to provide a comfortable living space to directly impact a quality learning space.
Presently, the girls’ bedrooms needs improvement. The shelter was damaged when strong winds created pressure between the roof and the second floor ceiling that knocked down ceiling panels in 4 of the bedrooms. We’ve recently sealed up the gaps where the wind was coming in. We now hope to repair the damaged ceiling before the rains begin again this year. Additionally, the foam mattresses we originally provided for the shelter have been used by scores of girls and need replacing. We would like to get new foam mattresses for each of the beds…20 in all.
